Privacy

Your games can stay on your device.

You can play every game without an account. This page explains what stays in your browser, what is saved when you sign in, and what can become visible when you choose to share it.

Effective July 24, 2026

The short version

  • Accounts are optional. Guest progress and preferences are stored in this browser.
  • Signing in adds sync. Your account, results, settings, and social features are stored securely online.
  • Public features are opt-in. A profile or leaderboard entry is not public by default.
  • There are no third-party ads. We do not sell personal information or use referral data for ad targeting.

Information we keep

On this device

The browser stores game progress, guesses, scores, dates played, preferences, daily-set timing, and small interface choices such as a dismissed install prompt. It can also store a random session ID for referral attribution and error reporting. The offline app may cache site files so finished games remain available when your connection drops.

Waymark coordinates are puzzle guesses, not your physical location. Sun’s Up does not ask the browser for precise device location. If you save reminder settings, the site may suggest and store your browser-reported timezone.

When you create an account

Our account provider stores an account ID, email address, sign-in method, session information, and sign-in timestamps. If you use Google, Google supplies the identity information needed to complete the sign-in.

Your account can also contain a display name, username, bio, avatar URL, profile visibility choices, game results and detailed result payloads, activity days, streaks, milestones, personal bests, preferences, feedback, and reminder settings. If push delivery is configured and you subscribe, we also store the push endpoint, delivery keys, device user-agent string, and subscription dates.

Coffee Tables

Coffee Tables store the table name and description, owner and member IDs, roles, join dates, invite records, and score summaries used for private standings. Other members can see the names and score summaries shown inside that table, but not detailed puzzle answers.

Sharing and public areas

A shared scorecard URL contains an encoded date, game names, scores, and—when included—elapsed time and streak length. It does not contain puzzle answers or your email. Anyone who receives the URL can open it, copy it, or pass it along. Deleting an account does not withdraw a self-contained share URL that is already in someone else's possession.

Public profiles are off by default. If you make a profile public, its username, display name, bio, avatar, and summarized activity can be viewed at its public URL. Global leaderboard display requires a public profile and a separate leaderboard opt-in. Public standings can show your username, display name, date, game, score, completion percentage, and rank; detailed answers, exact completion time, and play duration remain private. The current community board uses browser-synced, honor-system scores.

Coffee Table invite URLs should be treated like invitations. Anyone with a valid, unexpired invite may be able to join until its use or member limit is reached.

Service telemetry

Product activity

We may record page views, completed games, account-prompt actions, and completed friend challenges with a random browser session ID, page path, game name, puzzle date, timestamp, and signed-in account ID when available. These events do not include puzzle answers, email addresses, precise location, or advertising identifiers.

Scorecard sharing

When you use a scorecard share control, we may record the share surface, share method, number of games, game names, puzzle date, timestamp, random browser session ID, and signed-in account ID when available. This tells us which sharing experiences are useful; it does not prove that a message was delivered or opened.

Referral attribution

When a referral or shared-score link is opened, we may record a random browser session ID, referral code, source and campaign labels, landing path, timestamp, and whether the visit reached signup, a first completed game, or a completed daily set. If either person is signed in, the event can be linked to the relevant account ID. Referral attribution is used to understand which sharing features work.

Client-error reports

When the site crashes or encounters an unhandled browser error, it may send a random session ID, error fingerprint, error message, limited stack trace, page path, user-agent string, timestamp, and signed-in account ID when available. We use these reports to diagnose reliability and abuse; they are not used to build an advertising profile.

How we use information

  • Run the games and restore unfinished progress.
  • Authenticate accounts and sync results across devices.
  • Apply accessibility, map, sound, and gameplay preferences.
  • Build private Coffee Table standings and opted-in public rankings.
  • Respond to feedback, prevent abuse, and troubleshoot errors.
  • Measure referrals and improve the daily set.

Saving reminder preferences does not mean reminders are being sent. Email or push reminders work only when those options are available. Until then, the choices are stored but no reminder is delivered.

Services and sources

An account and data provider powers sign-in, syncing, and social features. Google processes information if you choose Google sign-in. Hosting, email, and push providers may process the technical information needed to serve the site or deliver a message when those services are available.

Daily anniversary content may be fetched from Wikipedia/Wikimedia. Puzzle research and answer links use sources including Natural Earth, NASA, Wikidata, museums, universities, public agencies, and other cited publishers. Most puzzle material is bundled with the app; following a source link sends you to that publisher under its own privacy policy.

When you use the browser or operating system's Share feature, the destination you select receives the text and URL you choose to send. Sun’s Up does not control the recipient service.

Retention and deletion

Device data remains until the browser removes it or you clear it. Clearing site data can remove guest progress permanently. Signed-in account records are kept while the account is active and as needed to operate the features described above.

Account deletion removes the live authentication record and dependent profile, synced results, preferences, reminder subscriptions, leaderboard entries, and Coffee Table memberships. A table you own may also be removed. You can separately choose to clear this browser's local Sun’s Up data.

Product, referral, share, and client-error events may remain after deletion with account references removed. Product, referral, and share events are scheduled for deletion after about 400 days; client-error reports after about 30 days. Aggregate statistics, security records, and other anonymized operational records may persist. Routine backups and provider logs may retain limited copies until their normal rotation completes.

Your choices

  • Play as a guest and keep progress only on this device.
  • Change profile visibility and preferences from Account.
  • Turn reminder choices off at any time.
  • Clear browser site data through your browser settings.
  • Request account deletion through the account controls, or use the feedback form if that control is unavailable.

Depending on where you live, you may also have legal rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing of personal information.

Children, security, and updates

Sun’s Up is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. We use access controls and other reasonable safeguards, but no online system can be guaranteed completely secure.

This notice may change as the games and account features develop. The effective date above will be updated when material changes are made. Questions or privacy requests can be sent through the feedback page.
